Last week, the Sport Positive Summit 2024 took place in London, gathering leaders from across the global sports industry. Supported by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and United Nations Climate Change (UNFCCC), the summit serves as a platform to discuss how sports can drive sustainability and combat climate change. Participants shared insights, best practices, and innovative strategies for integrating sustainability into sports organizations and events.
During this landmark event, the Jadir Taekwondo Association (AJTKD) was honored with the Community Initiative Award at the inaugural Sport Positive Awards. Their project, ‘Kicking for Nature,’ received recognition for its innovative approach to combining taekwondo with environmental education, benefiting underserved communities in Rio de Janeiro.
‘Kicking for Nature’ focuses on engaging young participants in martial arts while simultaneously educating them about sustainability and environmental stewardship. The project has empowered numerous youth, fostering a sense of responsibility toward their communities and the environment. Many former participants have returned as volunteers, demonstrating the initiative’s long-lasting impact.
Upon receiving the award, Grandmaster Jadir Figueira remarked, “It is with great joy that we receive the Sport Positive Award in the Community Initiative category. This recognition is a victory not just for the Jadir Taekwondo Association, but for all the communities and the thousands of children and young people we have assisted over the years.”
The Sport Positive Summit and the Sport Positive Awards mark a significant step in promoting sustainability within the sports sector, highlighting the vital role sports can play in addressing global environmental challenges.
